Keeping a one-year-old entertained on a plane can be challenging, but here are ten ideas to help make the journey more enjoyable for both the child and the parents!

1. Snacks

There is nothing more fun and distracting to a 1 year old than snacks! Bring a variety of snacks, for the wait in the airport and the plane, so you can always have one handy for when the toddler starts to get bored and wiggly.

If you know you’ll be traveling in a few weeks, you can save 1 small snack pack from each type you buy over the next month, so that you have a good variety of options and all the snacks stay interesting and exciting.

2. Favorite Toys

It may seem obvious to bring their favorite toys, but if possible, begin to hide a few favorites 1-2 weeks before the flight. Then, not only will they have their favorite toys, but they will be twice as excited to see them again since they haven’t been played with in a couple weeks.

3. Interactive books

Choose books with texture, flaps and bright colors to keep your little one focused for as long as possible during the flight.

4. Finger Puppets

These are so fun for little ones to play with in their plane seat, they can use them like dolls for creative play, or you can take a turn and make fun stories for them to watch.

5. Stickers

Bring a small notebook and sheets of stickers and let them go wild! Just make sure stickers don’t get left behind on your seats. You can also try a fun sticker book like this pack of 3!

6. Water Coloring

These simple water coloring sets are perfect for planes because it’s a mess-free way to let their creativity shine!

7. Balloon

This is the best tip I can share from times traveling with my toddlers. Bring a deflated balloon through security and blow it up once you reach your gate. This is a great toy for your one year old to play with while waiting to get on the plane, and it’s easy to throw away before you get on the plane.

As we all know, the best thing you can bring is your own patience, and make sure you’re ready to switch gears any second that your toddler feels bored.

Growing your travel Instagram account is one of the smartest things you can do for your travel blog!

Using these tips you’ll be able to get more organic followers to your travel Instagram!

This post has affiliate links

How to get free followers to your travel Instagram account

Use good hashtags on Instagram

Hashtags can be a great way to get your photos found on Instagram. Use a good combination between super-popular hashtags and very niche ones. For the smaller hashtags you have a higher chance of ranking in the “top” of the search for the most popular in that hashtag. Using the very popular hashtags gives you a chance to interact with people using it.

Aim for between 11-30 hashtags per post on Instagram.

Gorgeous photography

Posting amazing photos on Instagram may seem like a no brainer, but it’s worth mentioning. People look at your recent Instagram posts before deciding if they want to follow you, so make sure every shot is something you are proud to share with the world!

It’s also important to strike a good balance between photos of you traveling and people-free photos of your travels. Your followers will love getting to know the person behind the Instagram account when you are in the shot, but the ones where you stay behind the camera allow them to imagine what it would be like if THEY were on that trip too. Give them a good mix of both and they’ll want to stick around for more!

Tell stories with your photos

A picture is worth a thousand words BUT people love hearing the words too. Your gorgeous photo sets the stage, but share the story behind the shot too. Adding a mini blog post to the image helps your followers engage with you on Instagram and feel like they are traveling right along with you.

Convert your readers into followers

One of the BEST ways to grow your travel Instagram account is to leverage the views you are already getting on your travel blog. We use this irreplaceable app called MiloTree to get this done. MiloTree is a google-compliant smart popup that encourages your readers to follow you on social media. You are able to customize which social media accounts appear first and even when the popup appears on your site. It is small so it doesn’t get in the way but does WONDERS to help you grow your Instagram account! It also won’t slow down your site so it’s a better option than trying to embed your Instagram feed in your side bar (which can really bog down your site load time).

You can try MiloTree for 30 days risk free here!

Have fun growing your travel Instagram followers with these tips!

One of the BEST ways we’ve found to get the kids to settle down, is by listening to a good audiobook. Even the three year old happily pipes down in the backseat and listens in to the stories.

You could also rent books on CD from your local library, but I’m always scared I’ll lose the CDs on a trip, so I think Audible is a better option for travel.

Travel blogging can be anything from a fun hobby to a lucrative career. Either way, we are all looking for the same thing… more page views!

I have been blogging for over 12 years and have over 10 million pageviews under my belt (and that’s just on one site). While this particular URL is new for me, blogging professionally is something I’ve been doing for a long time.

Pinterest is one of the TOP ways you can get traffic to your travel blog. And yet, I constantly see many travel bloggers under-using pinterest or not using it correctly.

Here are some tips to help you get more pageviews from Pinterest.

This post has affiliate links to resources I personally use and love. I will make a commission if you choose to join a free trial or make a purchase through my links.

Images

Photography is everything, but certain types of photos do better than others for Pinterest.

Start with a nice vertical image. In general, longer the image the better (up to a length of around 2000). You can use a free photo editor like picmonkey to create a collage of images if your best ones are horizontal or square. Long images take up the most room int he pin feed, so you have a much higher chance of your pins being repinned or clicked, simple because they are on the screen for a long time.

Text

Adding text to your images can help a lot. You do not have to simply restate your blog post’s title. Find a fun “how to” type phrase that will catch a readers eye. Think “5 best things to do in Atlanta” instead of “What we did in Atlanta”. Make it all about the reader and get them to click!!!

TIP – Make sure the font you choose is easy to read! When in doubt choose simple fonts and keep the font colors simple as well. You want this text to be able to be read at a glance!

Creating your boards

When you create Pinterest boards, think through your idea reader and problems that they might be facing. Create your boards

Descriptions

At it’s core, Pinterest is a visual search engine. The descriptions you put on your pins is important!!! Fill those descriptions with keywords people would type in a search bar when looking for information about your topic.

EXTRA TIP – To be sure that all your pins have great descriptions, you can set them when you upload your image to the blog. In the box that says “alternative text” type in your Pin description. This will then auto-populate as the description when some one tries to pin that image from your blog.

Tailwind

If you feel overwhelmed at the thought of pinning enough content to keep your pin boards active, use a scheduler like Tailwind. (Get a free month here)

Tailwind will allow you to schedule out your posts to various boards at intervals so you don’t send a new post to all your boards at once. This will maximize the reach of each post on Pinterest by spacing out those shares.

Another way Tailwind helps you to get more traffic on Pinterest is through Tailwind Tribes. These are used by bloggers to share one another’s posts. Check out the video below and I’ll walk you through exactly how it works.

The most magical place on earth will always be the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. It turns out…they also have the most magical things to eat as well!

Disclosure: we were given tickets to visit the Wizarding World of Harry Potter at Universal Orlando Resort in exchange for giving you our honest thoughts on this blog.

One of the things I loved about visiting the Wizarding World at Universal Studios in Orland was how everything was thematic. While you may find regular “chain” restaurants through other parts of Universal Studios, when you enter the Wizarding World everything is magic. You aren’t going to find a Starbucks or a McDonald’s. Instead you’ll see the Three Broomsticks and the Hogshead inn.

The Wizarding World of Harry Potter is spread out between two of Universal Studios parks. You’ll need a park-to-park pass to visit both sides (which I highly recommend!). With this pass you are also able to travel between the parks on the Hogwarts Express. Amazing.

In case you only get to see one side, or if you’re just trying to plan which parks to visit when we’ll talk about food on each side.

On both sides you’ll find little carts that sell gilly water, pumpkin juice, butterbeer and fruit. There are also shops on both sides where you can buy souvineer food like bottled butterbeer, chocolate frogs, bertie botts every flavor beans and more.

HOGSMEADE

The city of Hogsmeade is located in the Universal Studios Islands of Adventure Park.

Start your wizarding culinary journey at Honeydukes sweet shop. This is the perfect place to buy tasty souvenirs for all your friends, and get some snacks for your day of magic.

Next, stop by the three broomsticks for the most amazing lunch. We were amazed at the quality of the food inside the park. I mean… just look at this lunch.

It was REAL food, and so delicious. After a few days of vacation and eating not-so-great vacation food this was incredible. I got cottage pie with a side salad and my best friend got a chicken leg quarter, a full corn on the cob and a side of potatoes.

There were several amazing dishes like this to choose from, we had a really hard time deciding what to get. All very Brittish foods like, Fish & Chips, Cornish Pasties, and Turkey legs! There’s even a “great feast” option if you are there with a large group!

In the back of the three broomsticks you’ll also find the Hog’s Head. It’s a bar area where you can get Butterbeer, Pumpkin Juice, imported beers, wine, and even spirits and mixed drinks.

DIAGON ALLEY

Diagon Alley is located in the Universal Studios Theme Park.

For edible souvenirs on this side, be sure to check out Weasley’s Wizard Wheezes shop. They have tasty snacks to bring home (or enjoy in the park) and lots of other must-have souvenirs too!

Florean Fortescue’s is right across from Gringott’s bank, and an essential part of the day in the Wizarding World. If you remember, this is Harry’s favorite shop and the owner used to give him free ice creams. They will let you get a few different flavors in one cup, so stock up on delicous flavors like Earl Gray and Lavender, Strawberry and Peanut Butter, Salted Caramel Blondie, and my personal favorite, Sticky Toffee Pudding.

The shop is small so we recommend crossing the street and enjoying your ice cream on the steps next to Gringotts and watching the wizarding world pass you by. It’s bliss.

After ice cream if you are ready for real food, walk back to the front of Diagon Alley and duck into the leaky cauldron. You’ll find more delicious Brittish Fare here, this time with sandwiches on the menu too! We only had one lunch and ended up eating it at the three broomsticks but from everything I could see the Leaky Cauldron had just as amazing options with real food to fill your belly!

One thing is certain, you won’t leave the wizarding world hungry. There is so much to do and EAT!!!

Print out these fun car games – they are absolutely free and will mean hours of fun for the kids in the car.
Help keep fighting to a minimum throughout the car ride by playing this fun keep-the-coins game. See how to play here.

Lacing toys are another great road trip activity for kids. Since the cards are large and the strings are long these are not easily lost if a kiddo drops them while you are in the car.

If you are considering getting a tablet to keep the kids busy in the car, we recommend the amazon fire for kids. It comes with a 2 year warranty, so if the kids break it they replace it NO QUESTIONS ASKED. That’s something that comes in handy if you’re buying something for your toddlers to play with (I won’t let them near iphones/ipads yet). If you are using tablets we recommend bringing some kid size headphones too!

Make a this adorable tiny magnetic fishing kit for the kids. It’s so little it fits in an altoid box and the fish are just too cute!

For interactive fun on your trip get the travel scavenger hunt game to play!

Melissa and Dough have a really fun travel memory game. Memory is one of my son’s favorite games, so I thought this was a smart way for him to be able to play it while in the car.

The washable dry erase travel set is another activity that’s perfect for kids of all ages!

Or you can make your own travel coloring case. So easy and adorable!

The tricky triangle puzzle is one that adults AND kids love to play in the car. See who can get down to the fewest pegs left!

Make your own bagged ball maze…it fits in a gallon size ziploc baggie!

You could even do this fun printable ABC pictionary! This would work for an only child or you could make multiple copies and have the kids race. I love that this would work for kids who can spell and those aren’t quite there yet!

Lastly, make travel binders for each child based off of their own interests and things they are looking forward to on the trip.

Do you have favorite games that you kids play when you are on a trip? I’d love to hear your ideas in the comments.

As travelers, we see a lot of hotel rooms. I heard about this new app on the news that we can use to help save lives from human trafficking, just by taking photos of the hotel rooms we stay in.

It’s really that simple.

Download the TraffickCam app, and whenever you stay in a hotel room, snap 4 photos in the room. Give them the hotel name, and room number too. (You don’t have to give any personal information).

The goal here is to create a database of photos and locations that law enforcement can look through when they have a photo of a trafficking victim but they don’t know where it was taken from. It can help them find where the girls are now, and where they have been. This can help both in rescuing girls and in prosecuting traffickers.

Watch the video below for more information about how law enforcement can use this tool here and how the idea came about, then make sure to download the app before your next trip so we can all help play a part in ending trafficking! Or read more here.

The grey skies of Seattle as a destination place for a family vacation may never cross your mind. Instead you may be dreaming of Disneyland, the beaches of Hawaii, or the lure of New York.

Just a hop, skip, and a jump away (29 miles, to be exact) lies the fun city of Seattle! Here, you won’t find the happiest place on earth. Employees won’t be singing their favorite tune with grins from ear to ear and the beaches may be a little chilly. We aren’t uptight about what we wear and employees will more than likely be showing their personality through their clothing choices rather than a crisp collar. We may just be a little hippyish in our natural beauty and organic ways! It’s common to misplace our sunglasses from year to year but when the sun shines, we soak up the rays!

Seattle Center

The Seattle Center is home to many of Seattle’s famous destinations!

Space Needle

The Space Needle was built for the 1962 Seattle World’s Fair. At 605 feet, the Space Needle provides a stunning 360 degree view of Mt. Rainier, Puget Sound, the Olympic and Cascade Mountains, and the active city of Seattle! Check out the view yourself on the Space Needle’s Panocam!

Take an elevator ride to the observation deck and check out the gift shop when you ride back down!

Nothing says Seattle more than the Space Needle!

Fun Fact: The Space Needle inspired the aesthetic for the Jetsons’ condominium!

Space Needle and the EMP

Experience Music Project Museum

The Experience Music Project building is a sight to behold and a conversation among many. Some call it a marvel and others think it is downright ugly.

It has been said that the building’s inspiration was a smashed guitar, in honor of Seattle’s Jimi Hendrix and his rebellious style.

Inside the museum you will discover the Sound Lab where you can try out many different instruments, Sky Church which houses the largest indoor LED screen in the world, as well as a music collection with many artifacts of music produced in the Northwest!

Infinite Worlds of Science Fiction and Can’t Look Away: The Lure of Horror Film are also part of the EMP. I’m not interested in horror but The Monster Shadow Wall and Scream Machine are two of my personal favorites!

Monster Shadow Wall

Chihuly Garden and Glass

A collection of Dale Chihuly work is on display at the Chihuly Garden and Glass Exhibition Hall, Glasshouse, and Garden. You may get a little peak of the garden at the base of the Space Needle!

International Fountain

The International Fountain was built for the World’s Fair and remains a centerpiece at the Seattle Center! Take a break on a hot day and feel the mist or go right up to the fountain and get soaked! The choice is yours! Sitting on the rim of the fountain bowl is an excellent place for a snack or to eat lunch, weather permitting.

Pacific Science Center

The Pacific Science Center is always a fun experience featuring interactive science exhibits, IMAX theaters, laser light shows, and a Butterfly House! I have to say the butterfly house is pretty awesome and the laser light shows, WOW! Imagine sitting or laying on the floor and watching a laser light show to an awesome song. Now imagine going on a field trip with your child’s class and watching the laser show! Yep! It has always been a favorite!

Ride The Ducks of Seattle

Not too far from the Seattle Center, and practically across the street, you will find Ride The Ducks of Seattle! The Ducks are an excellent way to see sights and tour Seattle while being entertained by a fabulously funny Captain!

View sights from a Duck and learn more about the EMP at A Day in Seattle!

Seattle Center Monorail

The Monorail is an excellent way to travel from Seattle Center to downtown Seattle! It has just two stops: Seattle Center and Westlake Center Mall and is a simple two minute ride worth taking!

After exploring all Seattle Center has to offer, the Monorail will get you within walking distance to Pike Place Market and the waterfront!

Pike Place Market

Pike Place Market is a year-round farmers market where you’ll find bakeries, produce stands, specialty food stores, crafts, food, and possibly flying fish! You’ll want to take a picture by the iconic Pike Place Market sign!

Starbucks

If you are a coffee fanatic, you will want to know the oldest Starbucks is located in the market. It is quite the tourist attraction and usually has a long line of coffee connoisseurs waiting to taste the goodness.

Fun Fact: The current Original Starbucks is actually the second location for the store. The first Starbucks was located a few blocks away at 2000 Western Avenue from 1971 – 1976 before it moved to 1912 Pike Place.

Just around the corner you will find:

The Gum Wall

The Gum Wall is self explanatory, gross, disgusting, and cool all at the same time! Chewed gum lines the brick walls of an alley way some in wads, some spelling names, oh, the possibilities are endless! It’s worth a look as you meander down to the waterfront!

Seattle Waterfront

The Seattle Great Wheel

The Seattle Great Wheel offers stunning views and an exceptional experience as it is the largest observation wheel on the west coast and extends nearly 40 feet beyond the end of the pier over Elliott Bay!

Argosy Cruise

If the loud excitement of the Ducks of Seattle aren’t your speed, you may want to tour the Seattle waterfront via an Argosy Cruise! You will hear a live narration as you cruise the waterfront taking in the beautiful scenery!

Ferry

Ferries are a mainstay of Seattle and an experience everyone should have at least once! Drive right onto the ferry and explore a nearby island!

View from the ferry!

Mountains

Hurricane Ridge – Olympic National Park

Better yet, take the Bainbridge Island ferry from downtown Seattle and head out to Hurricane Ridge on the Olympic Peninsula! This will be at least a three hour trip so it would be advantageous to book a room near Olympic National Park!

Hurricane Ridge, the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and Canada in the far distance.

Mt. Rainier

Mount Rainier is a sight to be seen! We get excited here in the Pacific Northwest when the grey skies clear and the mountain is ‘out’ in all it’s glory! It can be viewed from many places but, if you want to get up close and personal, head to Paradise and take a summer hike! You’ll discover waterfalls, wildlife, wild flowers, and, if the skies are clear, the mountain itself!

From city to water to mountains, the Seattle area holds many opportunities to explore! Put on your hiking shoes and get ready to climb the hills of Seattle or the trails of Mount Rainier! They are waiting for you to enjoy!

While making it to the gym is ideal it isn’t always practical. Life gets in the way and exercise gets put on the back burner. But that doesn’t mean you can’t stay active! Instead of looking for the perfect environment to workout use these five exercises to stay fit, active and healthy.

Most people believe that in order to stay fit you’ve got to join a gym or take up running. While those are both great forms of activity, they’re not the only ones. With life, work and travel more often than not keeping fit gets sidelined.

Which is why bodyweight training is ideal. Not only are you using your own bodyweight as leverage but these exercises can be done anywhere! Use them individually to get the blood flowing to your muscles or pair them together to make a quick, mini circuit.

Exercise #1 Paused Squats

Squatting is a movement we use each and every day- and thus it should be trained! Squats help improve lower body strength as well as maintain a good range of motion.

Paused squats are even more challenging as at the bottom of the squat (the hardest position) you’re going to hold for three full seconds, driving the knees out, and then pushing back up to standing. This helps train your glutes which are an under-active muscle.

Exercise #2 Push Ups

Push ups are a classic exercise and a staple for anyone training using just their bodyweight. They target the entire upper body and core musculature when done correctly. They’re an ideal exercise because there are so many variations. Branch out from performing standard push ups and opt for close grip, staggered stance or inclined. Each adjustment gives your body a new stimulus.

Exercise # 3 Walking Lunges

Walking lunges are a great way to target the lower body while increasing your heart rate. If you’ve no room to walk, stick to reverse lunges making sure that you’re pulling up through the front foot.

Depending on what you’d like to target, if you lean forward slightly from your hips you’ll notice more muscle activation in the back of the legs versus staying upright and feeling the front.

Exercise # 4 Planks With Shoulder Taps

Most people are familiar with planks but this variations increases the difficulty. It requires you body to stabilize and counter the removal or a supporting limb while maintaining its position. When done properly, planks are an amazing full body exercise. Ensure you’re focusing on activating all the necessary muscles though instead of just locking the elbows and hanging out, you’ll get more bang for your buck.

Exercise #5 Glute Bridge

This exercise is crucial for anyone looking to improve their back side! The glutes are provide aid in a multitude of functions (athletic performance, preventing injury, improving posture etc) that it is key to train them. Make sure you come into a full hip extension at the top of the movement and really “squeeze the bum” in order to fully target them.

Staying active doesn’t have to be rigid or planned. If you’re busy, traveling or just can’t make it to the gym, these bodyweight exercises are perfect. Don’t opt out of being active, instead use these exercises anywhere you find yourself with a few spare minutes!
